YESTERDAY could not have gone better for the Guernsey husband-and-wife pairing, Ian and Alison Merrien, who are strutting their stuff in the World Cup at the Warilla bowls club in New South Wales.

Both players returned two winning cards to keep their hopes of a place in the knockout stage very much alive, and are sitting pretty at the top of their respective tables.

This time it was perhaps Ian Merrien who stole the headlines, when he defeated the holder of the men's title, James Talbot from Ireland, in a topsy-turvy encounter, 13-9, 2-14, 4-1.

He had already hit top form to beat Malta's John Borg in straight sets, 8-7, 9-6, and his win over Talbot enabled him to climb to the top of the Division Two table.
