Watson through round one in France

Heather Watson has defeated Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the French Open.

The 20-year-old Guernsey girl turned in an excellent display to defeat the Ukrainian on the clay courts of Roland Garros.

It is the second successive year Watson has won a main draw match at the event and arguably the best win of her career so far.

She will now face either 25th seed Julia Goerges or Lucie Hradecka in the second round, likely to be played on Thursday.
