THE defending champion emerged with her familiar smile through the mist yesterday having secured safe passage to the semi-finals of the Intertrust Women's Island Championship.

Aimee Ponte was already eight up against Janette Riley when the pair reached the turn, by which time visibility at the 10th and across the back nine was worsening by the minute as the mist rolled in off Pembroke Bay.

With a careful eye on the flight of their ball while they could see it, the pair teed off and then trudged after their drives, soon disappearing from sight as they were engulfed by the gloom.

While gone, other matches out on the course were coming to a halt with conditions becoming unplayable, but Ponte had just enough time to wrap up victory before GGU president Jock Tanguy suspended play.
