Heather Watson played and won on Wimbledon's Centre Court last night, beating world number 55 Iveta Benesova, from the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-1.

This means 20-year-old Watson has became the first woman since Jo Durie in 1985 to win a match on Centre Court by toppling the world number 55 in straight sets.

Virginia Wade, the last Brit to win any women's singles title at Wimbledon in Queen's Silver Jubilee year of 1977 said of the Guernseywoman, 'I have a lot of time for her. Maybe there will be some big strong girls who will beat her but I think she's got all the qualities you need to get up into the top 10 in the world.'

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Miss Watson said was 'just so pleased to have got through'.
