AN ALMOST perfect final tee shot clinched a memorable win for George Melhuish in the Swoffers L'Ancresse Open.
The popular L'Ancresse member, who had started just before 1pm on Saturday, knew that he needed a closing birdie to stand a chance of victory as Ross Wheeler had set the early pace with an excellent 65 – one of four five-under-par rounds on the day.
To match Wheeler's score and edge him on countback, only a two would do for Melhuish and right on cue he stuck his approach on the short last to 12-and-a-half inches for a tap-in birdie.
That concluded a superb back nine of 33 for the five-handicap and he claimed overall honours on countback from fellow L'Ancresse members Wheeler (also off five), Phil Miles (six) and Willie Kirkpatrick (eight).
