LUCY BEERE and Gary Pitschou beat the defending champions to win back their respective island singles titles at the Corbet Field on Saturday afternoon.

Pitschou looked all but dead and buried at 16-20 down to his Vale Rec team-mate Matt Le Ber, before a haul of three and a single squared the match at 20-20 and the five-time champion nailed a precious single to win the decisive last end to win his first Elliott Trophy in six years.

Beere last won the women's singles four years back, since which Anne Simon has won two to take her tally to seven.

Under a grey early-morning sky, which matched the colour of Beere's bowls, the Vale Rec duo played out a mini-classic with the match in the balance until Beere won four ends on the bounce to transform a 15-14 advantage into a second title for the woman formerly of the Isle of Wight.
