THERE is a lesser known Chinese proverb of which Heather Watson should be made aware.

Loosely translated, it reads 'stick with it, get stronger and your time will come'.

Li Na, the Chinese player, who defeated the Guernsey star in straight sets in New York yesterday, followed that code and last year, at the age of 29, she won the French Open, one of the four Grand Slam titles available.

Na has developed into a formidable player and, seeded nine for the US open, she had too much guile, experience and power of stroke for Watson, who was beaten 6-2, 6-2 in 81 minutes on court.

The match was as good as over with Watson about to serve to stay in the match at 3-5 down, when the heavens opened at Flushing Meadow and the players were driven off Court 17 for more than a couple of hours.
