YOU can get an idea of how competitive seniors golf is in Jersey in many ways and not least the record books which now show that the Caesareans have won 13 successive Garenne Trophy senior clashes.

The latest was a comfortable 11-4 win over an improving but still outgunned Guernsey side at L'Ancresse.

What the record books don't show is that the Jersey 'oldies' take their golf so seriously that its eldest member, 71-year-old Micky Byrne, is playing off one, and its newest recruit, 55-year-old Trevor Gray, brushes up on his competitive instincts by playing in national seniors events around Europe and for the Hampshire county senior side.

The visitors had the latest inter-island encounter all but won by tea-time on Saturday.

From five fourball matches Guernsey could do no better than pick up half a point courtesy of Steve Birkett and Dave Warr.
