JERSEY'S storming start produced a lead that was never threatened, resulting in a comfortable win for the hosts in the Inter-Insular golf tournament at Grouville.

The young Jersey side achieved an unprecedented 5-0 whitewash in the Saturday morning foursomes and for all Guernsey's fighting spirit in keeping the Sarnian flag flying thereafter, the engraver's work on the trophy could already commence.

Jersey's margin was up to six points as the home team led 8-2 overnight at Royal Jersey and the miracle required by the Sarnians on day two did not come to pass.

Fittingly, it was Gavin O'Neill who secured the win with a never-in-doubt 20-footer across the 16th green to win 3 and 2 over Danny Bisson.

O'Neill was the only player with a perfect record over the weekend - his singles win was Jersey's 10th point and with Matthew Parkman holding a dormy-two lead over Steve Mahy, the home team were across the finish line.
