IT WAS a close call in the end, but Guernsey retained the Cognac Prince Hubert De Polignac Trophy for the overall team competition within the CI bowls Championship finals weekend.

The Sarnians won seven of the 14 matches played at Le Creux Bowls Club, which was just enough to hold onto the silverware, something which looked a formality after the visitors won six out of the 10 finals played on the first of two days.

Lucy Beere was the toast of the Guernsey squad as she overcame her doubts and that of many of the Guernsey contingent about playing on the new carpet laid down this year in place of the traditional grass green and won all three of her matches.

The carpet laid on the two Le Creux greens came at a cost of £153,000, to offset the annual £15,000 per year grass green maintenance.
