THIS weekend sees the start of the world outdoor bowls Champion of Champions event in Cyprus, the magical Isle of Aphrodite, where Matt Le Ber, pictured, will be carrying Guernsey's hopes.

For the first time the event will be staged on an artificial surface, on the quirky carpets at the Athena Beach Hotel in Paphos, where the Atlantic Championships were played last year.

Le Ber has been drawn in a group of 13 players, so will have 12 matches to play before the knockout stage begins – and his aim will be to finish in the top three in order to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Among his chief rivals are the 2008 champion Brett Wilkie, from Australia, Durham's David Bolt, who won the English national singles title in 2011, and Malaysia's Hislee Abd Rais.

The winners of both sections will be fast-tracked into the semi-finals, while the second and third in both groups will play-off for the other two semi-final places.
