GUERNSEY hope Matt Le Ber was kicking his heels on Monday night when he sat out the third round in the World Bowls Champion of Champions at the Athena Beach Hotel in Paphos, Cyprus. But he was glad to get back on the green yesterday morning.
Facing one of Malaysia's top young stars in Hizlee Abdul Rais, the Sarnian, pictured, struggled to find his best form, and was beaten in straight sets, 7-4, 14-5.
The first was desperately close and could have gone either way. But, at 6-4, the 23-year-old police officer from Kuala Lumpur clinched it with a single, but when Rais raced into a 13-1 lead in the second set, the writing was on the wall.
Showing character, Le Ber proceeded to outplay his next two opponents, beating Namibia's Willem Esterhuizen, 13-6, 9-7, and Holland's Frank de Vries, 7-7, 11-6, and is handily place sixth in his group league table, knowing that the top three will earn places in the knockout stage.
