BRILLIANT sunshine, a light breeze and a bucketful of personal bests – but few real surprises in Sunday's Jersey Spartan AC's Aztec half-marathon.

Guernsey's in-form Steve Dawes galloped away from the field to defend successfully the title he won last year – his third victory in the event and fourth triumph over the 13.1-mile distance in Jersey alone.

There was no surprise in the women's race either, with Jersey's Jo Gorrod keeping up her extraordinary 100% record of wins in the event – nine in all – again with an unchallenged solo run.

Solo running was a theme of the morning's run around the eastern parishes, starting and finishing on the athletics track at the FB Fields, with the lack of wind making group running far less essential than in previous years.
