A NEW £14m. generator will be helping power the island within weeks and Guernsey Electricity is planning to buy another.

The 360-tonne piece of equipment was brought to Guernsey at the start of September.

But with four kilometres of pipes and 20 kilometres of cable to connect, it has taken some time to get it ready.

Project manager Tom Woodford said the plan was to turn it on for the first time after Christmas and run it for a 30-day continuous trial, before it comes into service.

'It is smaller than our older generators, but much more efficient,' he said.
