GUERNSEY'S women's hockey team beat both Wokingham and the weather yesterday with a dominant performance in the FA Vase tie at Footes Lane.

But while the playing squad deservedly take the plaudits, credit too must go to the half-a-dozen volunteers who spent much of the second half sweeping away the water that continued to lap onto the pitch at the Rugby Club end.

For a few worrying minutes at the start of the second half, signs were looking ominous that the game might not finish as an almighty downpour eventually forced the players from the pitch while the officials sought to make the badly-affected area safe.

But out came the brooms and play could resume, albeit with the volunteers continuing to brush up while play progressed.
