THE Wimbledon semi-finalist of just three years ago was beaten by Heather Watson in three sets yesterday as Great Britain women stayed on course for a return to the Fed Cup world group.

Watson dropped the first set to Tsvetana Pironkova, the world No. 44, one above Watson but, in her customary dogged style and boosted by a pep talk from team captain Judy Murray, the Guernsey star bounced back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 and, with it, clinch the play-off win over Bulgaria in Eilat, Israel.

It was another great weekend for the Sarnian, who had won her singles against Hungarian Timea Babos on Saturday to ensure Great Britain of the play-off with the Bulgarians.
