On Sunday, the L'Ancresse first team captain was wrapped up in numerous layers of clothing on his home course in a biting wind with the occasional snow shower thrown in.

Now the island player has a trip to the world-renowned Pebble Beach Golf Links in California to look forward to – and temperatures in the high teens to go with it.

At least he departs, though, safe in the knowledge that his side are over the first obstacle in their 2013 Hampshire Sevens campaign and that he is in good form before he takes on the course Jack Nicklaus describes as 'possibly the best in the world'.
