A GOOD number of juniors were among the entries for this year's Guernsey Fencing Championships.

Many of them were fencing in an open age group competition for the first time and so gained much valuable experience.

In the men's foil, 16-year-old Alex Doherty emerged as top seed after the poules, earning a bye into the quarter-finals.

However, that match went for the full nine minutes before he beat Jonty Inderwick 12-9, while his semi-final went to extra time before beating Adam Garrard 9-8.

Second seed Jamie de Carteret had an easier passage in the other half of the draw, beating 15-year-old TJ Fitzgerald 15-8 in the quarter-finals and Michael Higgs 15-8 in the semi-finals.
