Guernsey 4, Jersey 3
GUERNSEY turned the tables on Saturday and inflicted a last-gasp hockey defeat on the old enemy 12 months after the Sarnians had suffered the same fate.
Jersey thought that they had done enough to retain the trophy they lifted at Les Quennevais a year ago when Tom Millar hit an equaliser to make it 3-3 with just five minutes remaining at Footes Lane.
But in a remarkable finale, Guernsey pressed for the winner and with only a matter of seconds remaining on the clock, Rick Dijxhoorn broke into the D, showing excellent close control at pace to reach the byline before cutting the ball back and in their desperation to clear, the ball hit the stick of one Jersey defender and rebounded into the net off the chest of another.
Captain Matt Watson admitted that it was a freak goal – but one he was grateful to accept.
