ALISON MERRIEN sits second in her section of the World Cup singles behind the only player to have beaten her so far in Australia.

The Guernsey star yesterday made it five wins from six games at the Warilla club with two more comprehensive victories, disposing of Ireland's Sally McAuley 9-3, 9-6 before winning the battle of the Channel Islanders by outgunning Jersey's Chrissie Grimes 9-3, 12-4.

Home superstar and world outdoor champion Karen Murphy tops group one with a perfect record, but is closely followed by Merrien with the top three in the group of 11 guaranteed to progress to the knockout stages.

Merrien's husband Ian was in equally impressive form on day three.

Firstly, he eclipsed Pakistan newcomer Maqsood Khan 15-3, 10-3 before overcoming Graeme Archer of Scotland in a much tighter encounter 8-6, 8-7.
