THERE was tiebreak heartache for Alison Merrien overnight in Austrlia as she lost the final of the World Cup Women's Singles in the cruellest fashion.

The Guernsey star, pictured, who was the defending champion at the Warilla club, won the opening set against world No. 1 Jo Edwards from New Zealand 8-3, but then lost the second by the same scoreline.

In a gripping tiebreak set, Edwards, who finished the competition with a perfect winning record, showed her renowned composure to win it 3-2.

'It was an amazing game,' said Edwards after securing her fourth world title.

'Alison totally outplayed me in the first set, it was a real turnaround. I was lucky enough to get it, it's just amazing.'
