Druce priced out of Games

TOM DRUCE, Island Games champion over 400m and winner of five individual track golds at the past three Island Games, has criticised the Guernsey Island Games Association for not taking into account the needs and wishes of athletes ahead of this summer's games in expensive Bermuda.
Father-to-be Druce, 26, pictured, said he is being priced out of representing the island, for whom he has won five individual titles and a string of relay golds during a highly successful track career.
But, having thought he had come up with an answer to his cash problems and worked out a way he could defend his title in Bermuda, it now seems he will not be able to attend.
'I was hopeful of travelling out to Bermuda after the British Championships in order to take my place on both relay teams and in the 400.
'But with the upcoming birth of our first child in September and the continuing monetary outgoings towards my athletics career I knew I wasn't able to justify paying £2,000-plus for one race and relays – even though I always want to represent Guernsey whenever I can.'
