TONY BLONDEL'S decision to play his L'Ancresse big guns paid off at a breezy La Grande Mare where they edged past the 2012 Hampshire Sevens champions.

But Ross Bateman's home team made them fight all the way, not least Darren Ogier who so nearly pulled off a remarkable win over Steve Mahy, only to lose agonisingly on the last green.

Mahy's par five secured L'Ancresse the overall win, but his heart was in his mouth a few moments earlier when Ogier, in receipt of 11 shots, so nearly holed his chip onto the green.

The ball lipped out and, when Ogier missed a par putt as long as he is tall, Mahy holed a tiddler for the win, the visitors' fourth of the morning.
