NIC POTHAS was anything but despondent after his young Guernsey side lost their 40-overmatch to Sussex Seconds by 94 runs at KGV yesterday.

The county pros paid the new-fashioned national side the compliment of playing full tilt in both their local games and, with that in mind, Pothas spoke enthusiastically despite a later order collapse which saw the Greens fade from a promising 71 for three to 107 all out.

'Out of the last two days if we take into account we were playing a bunch of pros – and I'm the last who will look for a cop-out excuse – we have done well,' said the new director of cricket.

'The fielding was very good, the middle overs cricket was very good and bowling-wise we dragged things back well.'

As for the batting, Pothas conceded there was was plenty of room for improvement. But it won't be too often that the side will come across such a mix of pacemen and skilled spinners, two of whom have already made their mark for the county first team.
