THE island side came close to pulling off an improbable victory yesterday - but the MCC crept over the line to finish their tour on a high.

However, while the result went against them, cricket director Nic Pothas is encouraged by what he saw from the youngsters being integrated into the Guernsey senior squad on a day when several teenagers got a chance in green.

'We are starting to get young blokes who are now contributing,' Pothas said.

'We acknowledged that what was important was getting their skill-base out onto a cricket field and getting numbers on the board. Now we are seeing them start to contribute in men's cricket.'
