NEVER before has the Guernsey section of the Hampshire Sevens seen anything like Wednesday night's local final.

There was little else L'Ancresse club captain Tony Blondel could do at the end other than shrug his shoulders and say 'it could have gone either way' as he walked back to the clubhouse after suffering defeat at the hands of the Royal Guernsey.

He was right, too.

The 5.5-1.5 scoreline details nothing of the drama, though, as all five of the home club's points came from rubbers which required extra holes as, amazingly, six of the seven were still all square after 18.

Only Jason Savident, the sole winner of a point for L'Ancresse, could claim to have done so within regulation distance.

Even then, David Nicolle had taken him down the last.
