It could have been so different if the chance he gave on only the second ball of the innings had been taken at the KGV, but instead it went to ground and the LML St Pierre opener made Cobo Tigers pay dearly.

His teammates did the sensible thing and were content just to give the big South African the strike. He made the most of it, clattering 128 from just 74 balls.

Smit's cutting and driving was good, his massive leg-side blows even better as he cleared the ropes five times, came close to clearing the de Beauvoir trees on at least one occasion and added a further 13 fours to his boundary tally.
