ONE of the greats of Hampshire women's golf had to bow to 17-year-old Aimee Ponte in the County Championship final.

The Guernsey and Channel Islands champion, pictured, emphatically completed a Hampshire double as she added the women's title to her junior crown by defeating Kerry Smith 8 and 6 at Royal Winchester.

Smith is a former winner of the EWGA Order of Merit and who played in the Curtis Cup for Great Britain & Ireland and also represented England for 12 years. But Ponte did not give her a chance of adding to her three county titles.

The two finalists have both been named in the nine-strong Hampshire team who will play in County Match Week at Blackmoor GC next week, along with the three other golfers whom Ponte beat in the knockout stages of the County Championships.
