KRIS BICHARD cleared the first hurdle in his bid to win the British men's outdoor junior singles title yesterday in Dublin.

The Vale Rec man proved to be far too consistent for his opponent, Alistair Coleman from Ballymena, who, understandably, had the crowd behind him, while the 25-year-old Sarnian was also able to play some telling bowls on the odd occasions when he was in trouble.

'I started well,' said Bichard, pictured, 'but the rink was faster than those at home, and a bit tricky – and Alistair began to find it over the last few ends, and came back into the game, so in the end I was relieved to get home, 21-16.'

Taking advantage of some early lapses from his opponent, Bichard opened with a full house of four shots, then added two trebles and another full house, and was 14-7 in front after only eight ends.
