Jeffery crowned inaugural winner

IT WOULD be doing the man an injustice by simply saying that fate played the major hand in the home favourite winning the inaugural Ravenscroft Guernsey Open Matchplay title and a prize worth £500.

It would be unfair because Dave Jeffery played quality sub-par golf to shock most observers by turning over the island champion, James Hamon, 6 and 4.

This just wasn't supposed to happen.

Jeffery, pictured, who had lost to Hamon in the island championship final at L'Ancresse over 36 holes, would give the 18-year-old a run for his money, but win? Probably not.

Jeffery not only won so convincingly but he did so on the back of losing the first two holes, the second after a nightmare shank.
