Ponte in top 20

AIMEE PONTE is tied for 19th after day one of the English Girls' Open Amateur Championship.

The Hampshire girls' and women's champion carded a four-over-par opening round 75 at Oake Manor Golf Club near Taunton in Somerset to lie eight shots off the lead.

Two double bogeys were the major blots on an otherwise solid card for the 17-year-old Sarnian.

After starting with seven straight pars, she took a six at the par four eighth, although a birdie three at the next saw her reach the turn in 37, just one over par.

Ponte began the back nine with four more consecutive pars, but a bogey at the par three 14th was immediately followed by a seven at the long 15th hole to take her four over.

She completed her round with three more pars to consolidate her four-over score.
