CARL HESTER MBE and Mary Russell-Vick OBE became the latest Guernsey sporting greats to be inducted into the Guernsey Sports Commission Hall of Fame at Beau Sejour yesterday.

The pair take the number of inductees to 19 in total and for 2012 Olympic Games dressage gold medallist Hester, it was a proud moment.

'To come all the way from my beginnings in Sark to today has been an incredible journey and although slightly longer than I may have planned, the main thing is I am here,' said the 46-year-old.

'People in England often assume that being born and living in Guernsey is a disadvantage for sportspeople, but when you look at the names already up on the wall, truly great names, I can't agree with that at all.

'Like many people, I left the island to further my sporting career and to try and realise my dream of reaching the Olympics, but I still see the islands as my home and so this is a special moment.
