ADAM GIRARD admits he was 'shocked' to break the Vazon Sprint bike record by nearly a tenth of a second.
Despite targeting Kent Gavey's time of 9.75sec. for some time now, Girard was only ever expecting to edge past it, not beat it in the manner of his brilliant 9.66.
Gavey's mark had stood for nine years until Girard's effort, which was an appropriate celebration of 40 years of Guernsey sprinting, the anniversary being marked at the weekend's meet.
He admitted that, as expected, the start was key to his eventual success.
'It is pretty much all about the start and when you get through the first two gears, you can tuck in and let the bike's power do the rest,' he said.
