MICHAEL DURCAN is delighted that his maiden PGA level victory will 'open doors up' in 2014.

The 21-year-old Royal Guernsey Golf Club pro won the second Voisin & Volaw PGA Channel Islands Challenge tournament played at Les Mielles Golf & Country Club in Jersey last week.

It was a dramatic conclusion to Durcan's first success in such an event because he won the £600 top prize on a play-off hole, after he and home player Mike Deeley had ended tied on an aggregate of 145 from their 36 holes.

The 54-hole tournament was reduced by 18 due to many greens being flooded by heavy rain.

Having secured his first win, Durcan is now looking forward to the future with increased optimism.

'I have been playing really well lately and winning this event was something I was really confident of, although we are now out-of-season really.

'There are a few events that I hope to get across to early next season and I have a plan for 2014 around the UK and further afield, starting with the PGA Catalunya in Barcelona in March.

'This win has certainly helped open doors for me.'
