Watson leads the way for Team GB
HEATHER WATSON helped get Great Britain's Fed Cup campaign off to a winning start, but they were made to work unexpectedly hard for their 2-1 opening day success over Latvia.
On paper, it looked a comfortable assignment for Team GB, facing the weakest side in their four-team group and containing singles players ranked at 216 and 715 in the world respectively.
The lower ranked of those, 16-year-old Jelena Ostapenko, took on British No. 3 Watson, who was only playing singles in the absence of Laura Robson, with Johanna Konta taking Team GB's top billing.
Although Watson won, she was pushed mightily hard in a topsy-turvy first set that saw seven breaks of serve and the Guernsey girl eventually scrape through by a narrow 7-5 margin, before cruising to a 6-1 win in the second for a straight sets win.
