Sarnians off to a great start in British Championships

WHEN the British Isles Indoor Bowls Championships got under way at the Stanley club in County Durham yesterday, Guernsey's bowlers hit a winning streak and were cockahoop last night.

A typically swashbuckling drive from Ali Merrien sealed a memorable 21-9 victory over England champion Carole Baker in the quarter-finals of the women's singles, while Todd Priaulx defeated Welsh champion Mike Dick, 21-16, at the same stage in the men's event.

Connor Rabey, who was drawn in the semi-finals of the men's under-25 singles championship, clinched his place in the final when he beat Scottish junior champion Scott Wilson 21-17.

There were also victories for Chris Dyer's men's triple over Ireland while Merrien joined forces with Shirley Petit to progress in the women's pairs.
