Having lost twice in the group – first to Ireland's Cliodhna Eadie and then to Malaysia's Siti Zalina Ahmad – Merrien was well aware that her two games over the weekend were must-win affairs and she duly rose to the challenge.

Having finished third in her group, Merrien will now meet title-holder Jo Edwards, who is universally regarded these days as the best woman bowler in the world.
