Merrien into knockout stages of World Cup in Australia

GOLD medal hope Ali Merrien has done enough in the Bowls World Cup on the quirky indoor carpet at the Warilla club to qualify for the knockout stage of one of the world's top tournaments.

Having lost twice in the group – first to Ireland's Cliodhna Eadie and then to Malaysia's Siti Zalina Ahmad – Merrien was well aware that her two games over the weekend were must-win affairs and she duly rose to the challenge.

She claimed a narrow victory over New Zealand legend Val Smith and went on to beat China's May Poon.

Having finished third in her group, Merrien will now meet title-holder Jo Edwards, who is universally regarded these days as the best woman bowler in the world.
