Appalling conditions do not blow golfers off course

AIMEE PONTE is through to the Hampshire Ladies' Championship semi-finals, the same stage as the Intertrust Island Men's Championships have reached after the quarter-finalists battle wind and rain as well as each other last night.

Ponte is defending her title at Stoneham and after progressing into the knockout stages as top seed after the 36-hole qualifier, she beat Jane Bennett 8 and 7 in the first round before lightning suspended play in Hampshire.

Once back on the course, she overcame Di Oram 5 and 3 to set up a repeat of last year's final against Kerry Smith this morning.

Meanwhile, Jack Mitchell produced an outstanding display of ball striking to knock second seed Daniel Griggs out of the Island Championships in atrocious conditions at L'Ancresse.

He will now face Danny Bisson, who needed an extra hole to see off Matt de la Mare, while Jamie won the battle of the Blondels by beating his cousin Danny to set up a semi-final with Bobby Eggo, who won 1 up against teenager Jeremy Nicolle.

The semi-finals tee off at 4.50pm today.
