Big shock as Druce retires from sport

Multiple Guernsey record-holder and Island Games medallist Tom Druce has announced his retirement from athletics with immediate effect.

Druce competed in the 400m heats in Glasgow on Monday, but was obviously not at full fitness following recent viral infections as well as a tight hamstring.

He was then, in his own words, withdrawn from the 200m by the Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association due to 'medical reasons'.

But the subsequent announcement of his retirement yesterday came as a shock to all.

'It has been an honour and a privilege to pull on the Guernsey vest from my Island Games debut in 2003 right up to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games this week,' he said.

Druce insisted that the decision was not a knee-jerk reaction to his struggles at the Games, but something he has been considering for months now that he has a young family which has led to lifestyle changes.
