The 25-year-old seems to save his best golf for the island's biggest open event and there could hardly have been a more popular winner once his triumph had been confirmed on Saturday evening.

He had not wanted to count his chickens before they had hatched earlier in the day, but having posted a superb net 66 in the morning of a tough day when the wind whistled across L'Ancresse to such an extent that only three players finished in red figures, Wheeler sat in the clubhouse expecting rather than hoping that his moment had come.

'It's always nice to play your best golf in this competition because it means so much,' he said.

'It's just great to be in the mix when it comes down to it.'
