Watson's ideal birthday present
AFTER securing his first title – the International Masters bantamweight belt – Bradley Watson is targeting a big Commonwealth eliminator fight in the new year.
Watson, who turned 24 yesterday, got the ideal early birthday present with a comprehensive points win over George Gachechiladze to extend his perfect record to 10 wins from 10 fights.
In his first eight-round fight, Watson won every round for an 80-72 success, although he admitted he was not totally satisfied with his display against the Georgian.
'To be honest, I felt I lost one of the rounds but, saying that, I was always in control and knew I had one, but he was a difficult lad to hit,' he said.
'He was really awkward and think he had been told the damage I can do with my body shots, so got his body out of the way well, although I was still the one landing the bigger shots.'
Although Watson's next opponent is undecided, he is almost certain it will be to set up a possible Commonwealth title showdown with Ross Burkinshaw.
'We are looking at hopefully getting some world-class sparring for a week before Christmas to help me prepare and then, it should all be set for a big fight in January,' said Watson.
'It could be Jason Cunningham that I fight in this eliminator, but I am not sure, there are two or three possibilities.'
Also in action over the weekend was Tom Duff, who won his second pro fight with a 39-38 points win over Jamie Gelder in Bristol.
'Me and my coach both felt that I won every round and so were surprised that I only won two rounds, as well as drawing one and losing one,' said Duff. 'But I was happy with my performance, it was a step up from last time against a better opponent and I always felt in control.'
