THE wait is nearly over for Andy Whalley and his EH Trophy holders as Guernsey face their first home game since last season's EH Trophy/Inter-Insular double.

'We are really excited – this is what we have been longing for,' said Guernsey's player-coach as Footes Lane, complete with brand new pitch, prepares to host Sonning tomorrow in the second round of the national competition.

'It was horrible to get an away draw in the first round because you start to wonder if you will get the chance to play at home. So, after getting through that first game, to get a home draw this time gave us a real buzz.

'There should be a really big crowd, a great atmosphere and the pitch is now playing really, really well so hopefully it should be a showcase game for Guernsey hockey,' he added.

Following the 3-2 first-round win at Basingstoke, Whalley admitted that his squad have been working on certain aspects of their game.

'How we played in the second half of the first game was better than how we played in the first half. The alterations we made suited us better as a team,' he said.

Guernsey v. Sonning starts at 2pm tomorrow.

Guernsey squad: Gidney, Cormack, Peacegood, Cairns, Alford, Lowin, Whalley, Le Page, Stokes, Smith, Setters, Kendal, Waldrom, Dawes, Damarell, Bain.
