CI team earn promotion to Division Five
THE Channel Islands men's team came out on top of Group 6B to earn promotion in the Aegon Winter County Cup in Sheffield at the weekend.
Two impressive 8-1 wins on the opening two days, against Cumbria and Shropshire respectively, all-but put the CI in an unassailable position at the head of the group before their final match with Cornwall.
'We already had two match wins with 16 rubbers out of 18, so we knew that even if we lost to Cornwall it would come down to match countback and we just needed two out of the nine matches on the final day to finish top based on the margin of our lead,' said Rob West, one of the two Guernsey players along with Patrick Ogier in the seven-strong team.
The CI achieved their goal with plenty to spare as they tied the singles with Cornwall 3-3 before there were a couple of concessions in the doubles to ensure they caught their flight. In the end, Cornwall took the match 5-4.
West finished with a perfect record of six wins out of six while Ogier, who played at No. 1 in the singles, won five of his rubbers.
