Merrien shuts door on rival

HAVING masterminded a remarkable escape act the previous week, Todd Priaulx very nearly did it again in round five of the Project Hire Triples Super League.

But this time he and playing partners Len Bretel and Mac Timms just fell short as they lost their unbeaten record in dramatic fashion.

Opponent Ian Merrien scored a single on the last end to beat Priaulx 18-17.

The result leaves Chris Dyer's squad as the only team with a perfect record of five straight wins, Dyer winning a low-scoring encounter against Terry Dowinton.

Dyer had his own battle against a Dowinton squad which had not claimed a point this session, but led 11-8 with four ends remaining.

The former Muratti skipper's fighting spirit again came to the fore and a run of four winning ends, including a four on the 16th, took him 16-11 ahead by the end.

The league is hotting up nicely and Ali Merrien is far from out of it either with just one defeat from five matches.

Alongside Paul Keltie and Dave Jeffery, she steamrollered Steve Desperques' trio, 30-5.
