'Come on in' - GCB gets voted aboard

IT WILL set the Guernsey Cricket Board back £30,000 per summer, but from the 2016 season the island's elite players will get the regular competitive tests they require to improve them for the world stage via a place in the Sussex Premier League.

The annual meeting of the Sussex Premier Cricket League, held last night in the Long Room at the Hove Ground, home of Sussex CCC, voted unanimously to accept Guernsey into their leagues.

There were no dissenting voices on the floor and Guernsey, who were represented at the meeting by GCB chief executive Mark Latter and ex-officio board member Dave Brooks, will play in Division Two initially as they find their feet at a higher level of club cricket.

It is hoped that in time the island will move into the Premier League.

Guernsey, who will play as a club side as opposed to an island representative side – much like the GRFC and Green Lions – can expect to play 10 matches per season, playing each other team once.

'We are looking at ways to play more competitive cricket and while ICC is unchartered waters for the next few years, this will be a competitive base to hone our skills,' said Mark Latter.
