Mahy is left to ponder what might have been
BOBBY EGGO took advantage of one horror hole from Steve Mahy and retained the Ravenscroft Trophy with a one-shot winning margin over Daniel Griggs in a tight finish to yesterday's major 36-holer at L'Ancresse.
The event serves as a qualifier for the prestigious mid-summer Open Matchplay tournament and produced some fine golf.
While George Melhuish was easing home in the handicap stakes and lifting the magnificent Brymay Trophy as his reward, Eggo was shooting rounds of 71 and 73 – four over in total – to finish just ahead of Griggs, who followed his morning 69 with a 76.
Griggs' consolation was a place in the main Ravenscroft Open Matchplay at La Grande Mare, while the other two qualifying spots went to island stars Mahy and Danny Blondel, the latter pipping top junior Jeremy Nicolle on countback.
Mahy and Griggs had produced the only two sub par gross rounds of the morning, Mahy shooting a two under 68 to better Griggs' pre-lunch effort by one.
The morning's overall leading score was the net 67 by Martin de Carteret, who, playing off 14, parred seven holes and had just one six on his consistent card.
