No upsets as big names join seeds in first round

THERE were no big surprises but some good players still fell at the first hurdle yesterday as the 2015 Intertrust Island Men's Championship got under way.

At the top of that list was reigning Channel Islands junior champion Robbie Garner, but having been drawn against former inter-insular player Matt de la Mare in the preliminary round, the youngster was arguably the underdog against a proven competitor at L'Ancresse.

It turned out to be one of the best encounters of the afternoon with little to choose between the two through a match that went the distance, with de la Mare finally emerging a 1-up winner.

He will now play Tom Pattimore.
