Andy Eggo leads way after opening 65

THE champion got his defence off to a solid start, but Danny Blondel is already playing catch-up after Andy Eggo stole the show on the opening day of the Energy Centre and UV Trophies 72-hole strokeplay competition yesterday at L'Ancresse.

Blondel shot a level-par first round of 70 and lies third in the scratch Energy Centre Trophy standings after day one, but it is his Island Games teammate Eggo who leads the way after an outstanding 65.

No one could better scratch-handicap Eggo on the day in either medal competition.

Tom Le Huray was the only other player to break par in the scratch standings thanks to a fine 69 gross, which put the three-handicap player from the Royal Guernsey second in both trophies.
