Irresistible Eggo moves five clear
A BIRDIE blitz over his closing half-dozen holes yesterday has put Bobby Eggo on the brink of another 72-hole strokeplay title.
The island champion carded the best score of the third round as, for the second day in succession, he was the only player to shoot in red figures off scratch at L'Ancresse, this time with a two-under-par 68.
It was good enough to move him five shots clear of defending champion Danny Blondel in the Energy Centre Trophy scratch standings after 54 holes, but with the rest of the field a further five shots back, surely only Blondel can prevent the former Walker Cup player from adding another prestigious title to his already outstanding CV.
It was all about the back nine for Eggo yesterday, though, as he was two-over par through his first four holes due to bogey fives at both the second and fourth.
He briefly pulled a shot back thanks to a birdie on the eighth, but that was quickly cancelled out by a bogey on the ninth as he reached the turn in 37.
He then started the back nine with three successive pars before he really began to shine in the sun.
A three at the 13th was followed by another birdie on the par-five 14th and, after a par on the next, back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 made it four in five holes.
A par at the last saw Eggo finish with three successive threes for an inward nine of 31 and a 54-hole aggregate of 208 to have one hand on the trophy going into the final round.
