Perkins beats O'Neill in massive upset at LGM
AS UPSETS go, they do not come much bigger.
It was undoubtedly the biggest in the three-year history of the Ravenscroft Guernsey Open Matchplay as second seed Jersey star Gavin O'Neill came unstuck last night against Guernsey junior champion Trystan Perkins, who beat the Hampshire player 2 up on a memorable, albeit damp and grim evening out west.
'I was only thinking about playing well and didn't have any expectations,' Perkins said on the 18th green, moments before being swamped by family.
'I just had a few putts that had to fall and they did.
'I didn't deserve to be ahead, to be honest. I felt quite lucky,' added the teenager who will now face Danny Blondel – a 4 and 2 winner over Louis Sheppard.
First round:
Bobby Eggo beat Colin Bourgaize 7 & 5; David Jeffery beat Jeremy Nicolle 5 & 3; Norman Wood lost to Daniel Griggs 5 & 4; Matt Buckley lost to Alex Guelpa 4 & 3; Michael Durcan lost to Jamie Blondel 2 & 1; Steve Mahy beat George Melhuish 2 up; Louis Sheppard lost to Danny Blondel 4 & 2; Trystan Perkins beat Gavin O'Neill 2 up.
